The difference between 'inside fighting and clinching/holding' Andre Ward/Lennox/WK

First off I like to say that Wladimir DO NOT NEED a inside game. He is a certified top 10 ATG at HW and becoming even higher. I just wanted to use him as a example, because he honestly do not fight on the inside. (Once again because he DON'T NEED TO)

I read a lot of people complaining about how Ward clinches and holds just like Wlad. About how Lewis and Ali used to clinch and hold.

There is a massive difference between them.

Both Lennox and Wlad clinches and holds a fair amount but the difference is
Lennox fights inside, whereas Wlad just holds you like a vice grip. Lewis is pounding away inside in virtually every clinch. Throwing upper cuts, short hooks, pounding to the body, head. Every time Lennox holds,he is pounding away and doing all these things to ensure damage is done.

Wladimir don't really do any of that, he just holds and stops. This is the primary reason I will never favor Wlad over Lewis in any h2h scenario. You can't fight a 6'5-6'6 guy who's just as skilled and strong as you are when you don't have a inside game.

Ward is similar in that he's not just holding but doing a fair amount of damage. During stretches of Chad Dawson fight you can clearly see the damage being done via beautiful inside fighting.

Ali's holding is a bit different in that he had shocking reflexes/agility during his prime and will often use clinches as a means of getting back to the center where he can continue dancing away and using his superior speed/footwork to dominate his opponents.

What other inside fighters impressed you?

Joe Frazier was king on the inside.

It's one of the reasons I find it hard to rate Wlad in the top 10 heavyweights, as he's proven to have nothing on the inside.

If the other fighter grabs you first you can legally hit him. If you grab him and pound away it is holding and hitting and it is against the rules. The rules may not always be inforced but grabbing a guy with one hand and punching him with the other hand is illegal. Ward gets away with it in Oakland and Hatton gets away with it in England. Clinching without punching and then letting go like Wlad does is legal if it's not done to excess. A fighter can lose points or even be disqualified for excess holding. Lennox was vastly superior to Wlad at legal inside fighting. Wlad likes to grab and when he grabbed Lewis he would legally get hit. Lewis had a good jab but Wlad has a better jab, almost as hard as a straight right. Both men were big punchers with average chins so a KO ending is likely. I favor Lewis but I think Wlad could win.

All holding is illegal and Wlad does excessive holding. He was smashing Wach against the ropes last night and still going in to hold even though nothing was coming back.

Its not that Lummox fighting inside was legal though. What he mostly did was holding and hitting. One of the dirtiest HW Champions in history.
