Comments Thread For: Cleverly's Training, Skill at Wild Card Impresses Roach

NATHAN Cleverly has been going wild in LA this week in a bid to showcase his boxing talent.

Wales’ WBO world light- heavyweight champion has become a regular at the world-famous Wild Card gym of top trainer Freddie Roach.

And Roach has been so impressed that he has invited him to train in the gym whenever he wants.

Cleverly, 25, makes his fourth title defence in the early hours of Sunday against Shawn Hawk and loves the weather in this sunshine state of California.

Nothing wrong with training at Wild Card, good atmosphere, decent sparring half the time.

As long as Cleverly doesn't hire Roach as a trainer it's fine, but if he hires Roach there's a chance he could be ruined as a fighter, at world class level, because Roach will change his style and make him far too offensive.

Cleverly IS verry offensive. I think Roach could make him even better. Style-wise they should be a good team.

        Cleverly needs a Roach.

With no trainers of note in Wales or Britain a kid like Cleverly needs a superior skilled trainer like Roach or Hunter or Atlas. Cleverly has never been taught how to fight correctly.

LOL. You sound like an idiot with that comment. I take it your one of those bigtime Roach haters. LOL, fu**ing tool.

            Cleverly & Roach wouldn't work.

Cleverly's main problem is he's too offensive and neglects his boxing, which is what will make him succeed. If he had some serious power then his lack of defence and style would suit Roach and it would be beneficial.

But as it is, he's a brawling, feather fisted fighter who's last option for a trainer is Freddie Roach. He needs to find someone who will fix his defensive flaws and ensure he works behind the jab.

Cleverly & Roach would be like Khan & Roach, except Cleverly doesn't have a variable (speed or power) to make it work. Even then, other areas end up lacking severely.

Good post, and pretty much mirrored my perspective. Cleverly needs to focus on improving his boxing ability but under Roach he'll just be trained to be overly offensive. He can get away with it at domestic level, but at world class level I suspect it would be his downfall.
