From Seconds Out today
By Ant Evans: Former undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins will have a farewell fight on March 11, Golden Boy Promotions have revealed. HBO will televise from a location to be determined, but 'the Executioner' is widely expected to call for the curtain of his Hall of Fame career in his native Philadelphia.
Golden Boy Promotions President Richard Schaffer told SecondsOut Thursday (Dec 22): "We are going to meet Bernard over the holidays and talk about his farewell fight. We have the date of March 11 and have a (shortlist) of opponents but that's really all I can say right now. We need to talk to Bernard."
Everyone knows that Hopkins, who defended his IBF middleweight title for the 20th time in February before losing two close decisions to new champ Jermain Taylor, made a promise to his late mother to retire age 41. The former champ turns 41 next month but also doesn't want to go out on a losing performance.
Interestingly, B-Hop may be more assertively matched than the Golden Boy East Vice-President originally planned when he first mentioned this encore performance while building up to his December 3 rematch with Taylor.
Schaffer said: "I don't think Antonio Tarver (who has been mentioned in connection with Hopkins's final bout) is a possibility at all but we there are some good fighters we are going to talk to Bernard about."
Who do we think he'll fight? I think maybe someone like Markus Beyer, Clinton Woods or maybe even someone like Sergio Mora or Ronald Wright. I think one of the first two is more likely - someone Bernard would be able to beat and bow out by winning a world title at a second weight.
