Remember Bert Whitehurst?

I am wondering how Bert Whitehurst died? He was only 49 when he passed away on April 21, 1981. He was one of the few men who went the distance with Sonny Liston--twice! I believe he became a school teacher after he hung up the gloves. Any biographical info, manner of death, etc, would be appreciated. Thanks.
