"I hope to raise the Paez boxing name even higher than my father did," said Jorge Maromerito Paez Jr. from the press conference put together by his promoters at Sycuan Ringside. The 18 year old out of Mexicali has five bouts and five knockouts and is already stirring up much interest in the boxing world. "I think I'll be a world champion in about two and a half years," says the confident yet humble kid whose father Jorge Maromero Paez was the most charismatic fighter to come out of Mexico. He was also arguably, one of the most talented and popular world champions of his generation. "I'm kind of like my father. I'm a lot more calm than he was but every once in a while his personality takes over me," said Paez Jr. when asked how he resembles his famous dad. Sycuan Ringside signed him to a four year deal and expects their charge to rise to the very top of the boxing mountain. "I think this kid will be fighting the Mayweathers and others of his stature. He's that good," said Sycuan Ringside president Glenn Quiroga.
Paez Jr's co-manager Francisco Arellano brought up the name of Chavez Jr. at the podium during his brief speech at the press conference. "We want Chavez!" he exclaimed from the dais. Both Jr.s faced off against each other as amateurs in an exhibition match. The end result was a draw. "If our paths ever cross again then we'll fight. I have nothing against him but who knows what the future will hold?" said Paez of Chavez Jr. Maromerito continued on since their encounter and garnered an impressive amateur record of 80-1. Paez now campaigns as a lightweight but is still growing and a jump to the Jr. Welterweight or Welterweight division seems likely. Jr. also stated that that even though he and his father have been apart, the original Maromero has been at all his fights and is hopeful he will attend Friday's event.
Paez Jr. will be taking on Lee De Leon this Friday at the Sycuan Casino in El Cajon, California. If you're trying to get tickets you're out luck since all 490 seats sold out at $50 dollars a shot about a week after the card was announced. According to Quiroga, Sycuan is currently working on building a venue at the casino that will eventually hold three to five thousand people. The interest has been high for this fight. Driving the demand is the solid card put together from top to bottom which will feature hot Filipino Prospect Rey Bautista (18-0, 14 KOs) taking on the hard as nails Gerardo Espinoza (28-9, 26 KOs). Bautista is ranked #1 WBO in the Bantamweight division. Also on the card is WBC #11 Urbano Antillon (16-0, 10 KOs) taking on Fernando Trejo (25-10-4, 17 KOs). WBA #9 ranked Anthony Thompson will be taking on Adrian Lopez (9-1, 4 KOs) of Houston. "
