  • Comments Thread For: George Groves To Face Glen Johnson On Dec. 15

By Jake Donovan - Unbeaten super middleweight contender George Groves will next face former light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson at the Excel Arena in London on December 15. The news was formally announced during a press conference Wednesday afternoon in London.

“It will be my toughest challenge,” Groves (15-0, 12KO) said of the fight. “No one has an easy fight against Glen Johnson.”

The news came as a bit of a surprise, given that Johnson (51-17-2, 35KO) announced his retirement earlier this summer after a points loss to Andrzej Fonfara. While not uncommon for any fighter to break such a promise, the fact that Johnson is 43 years old and has lost five of his last seven contests led many to believe that this one would stick.

That said, Groves is still prepared for the very best version of Johnson.

“I’m buzzing for the fight and am preparing for 12 hard rounds because he will give anyone a hard night’s work. I’ll be ready.” [Click Here To Read More]

I would not be surprised if the WBA or one of the other alphabet organizations creates a seniors belt. Sorta like the seniors golf tournaments. And after he knocks out Frans Botha again Evander Holyfiled will be the inaugural Seniors World Heavyweight Champion of the World. And Johnson and Roy Jones can fight for the vacant light heavy title on the under card. The age limit can range from 42 to say 55 and AARP and Viagra can sponsor the seniors championship circuit.

Didn't Glen retire like 6 and a half minutes ago?- haa ..... Really though, out of that whole group of fighters that retired recently- if any of them should Not have quit , it was Glen Johnson. He always lost a lot - but never gets beat up or looks that bad. why not get a couple more paydays..

I feel bad for the boxers that just cannot say enough is enough. Boxing is all they have ever known, so when it comes to retirement, there really is nothing left for the majority to look for.

Glenn has been out of his depth for some time, and since dropping to 168, it has done nothing to help. He's approaching his mid 40s. I'm kind of glad in a way that he's still earning a pay, but it's a sad thought to behold at the same time.

The fight itself will be a great learning curve for Groves. 2013 is his time to really step into the next level. Glenn is as tough as they come, but Groves will see out a comfortable UD with no real scares.
