Comments Thread For: Robert Garcia: Khan Made The Right Move To Hire Hunter

Robert Garcia has become one of the top trainers in the game. He will be in Nonito Donaire's corner Saturday, when the Filipino star faces Toshiaki Nishioka - as well as Brandon Rios' when he takes on Mike Alvarado in a junior welterweight showdown. He believes that as long as Amir Khan was going to make a change, Virgil Hunter was a good choice for a new trainer. Khan recently parted ways with Freddie Roach.

It was a close fight and many had Peterson winning. There was a poll on this website straight after the fight with more votes for Peterson than Khan. When it is that close you can't put it down to homecooking.

Definitely the right decision to leave Roach in my opinion. Khan made exactly the same mistakes in sparring as he did in the Garcia fight. Any competent and attentive coach would have corrected that but Roach failed to do it which tells me that either he didn't realize Khan was making mistakes in sparring or he wasn't actually training Khan enough to spot them.

I like when trainers acknowledge other trainers and give them the respect they deserve. Unlike around here where the keyboard and tv experts dismiss them.

In this case, Roach is partially responsible - he doesn't teach defense & doesn't make any adjustments when his fighters are catching the business. Meaning: he's not prepared. Roach trains his fighters like he used to fight & he wasn't a good fighter......
