Jose Luis Castillo: Underrated Mexican fighter, underrated fighter in his time?????

It seems like from loads of people that Jose Luis Castillo doesn't get the props he deserves as a really good fighter, and probably the best LW of his era. I saw someone literally lump him in with Augustus, Gatti, and Ward, which is just flat out wrong in my opinion.

Castillo is a 2x LW Champ, and a lineal LW champ.

He had wins over Stevie Johnston (WBC LW Champ/#1 LW), Cesar Bazan (Top 10 LW), Juan Lazcano (#1 LW), Joel Casamayor (#2 LW), Julio Diaz (Top 10 LW), and Corrales (WBC/WBO/RING LW Champ).

He should also arguably have a win over Floyd Mayweather, one of the top 1-2 fighters in this entire era, a certified Top 30-50 ATG.

He just doesn't seem to get the same amount of love as other Mexican fighters on here, and seems to be extremely underrated by many on here. Anyone else agree???

No ****ing duh he was underrated.

It just doesn't pay among boxing critics/media/specialists to be a guy who gets hit alot. They view that as an INSTANT NEGATIVE.

My theory is that you can be the greatest fighter of all time if you're somehow slick enough to not get punched in a fight.

You can throw 1 punch in the first round...................run away (afraid of combat) the rest of the fight and win.

Castillo was an exceptional fighter and certainly deserves better than to be lumped in with Augustus, Gatti, and Ward. That being said no way is he an ATG top 50 let alone a top 30. Better take a count of how many great fighters there have been through out the history of this great sport

I'm sure the TS was referring to Mayweather as being a top 30-50 ATG, not Castillo.

Castillo is my 3rd favorite boxer, behind Morales and Chavez and ahead of Rafael Marquez.

I loved those Johnston fights, gotta be one of the best caliber ESPN fights ever. Bazan was also a good fight, kinda boxed in that fight for a while before hurting him, Bazan was good himself. lazcano a good win as well, I think he boxed a little in that fight too. The little series of fights between him, Corrales, and Casamayor produced good competition. casamayor wasn't that great to watch until the end I believe, but at least they fought

Castillo one of the best skilled pressure fighters of recent times..if Rios or Chavez Jr had any of the types of skill in slipping, picking off shots, cutting the ring off, and getting off inside they'd wouldn't be seem so out of their depth at times against difficult styles. I'll give Rios some slack he has faced some tough styles and gotten thru. JLC took two to give one, but not four or five like others who try that style might. Still was able to figure out his way inside and stay active on every fighter he fought no matter how talented, dirty, or tricky

castillo was supremely skilled, ver tough and as you mentioned holds an 'unoffical' win over floyd.

i think in his prime his skills come pretty close to JMM.
