Cruiserweight who twice beat Chris Eubank - still active, though he makes Hopkins look like a youngster these days.

What I love about The Cat is that he's absolutely mental. He has a voice like a gay George Formby and will take an absolute caning for round after round yet won't stop coming.

I recalled him today when thinking about the KOs of 2004 and realised that there was a major one missing - Carl's amazing "come from behind" nine round KO of Sebastian Rothwell.

Anorak....you walked into that one man LOL it was ass spliting, i mean side splitting as you brits would say lol. I have massive appreciatation for Carl Thompson. I think he shouldn`t have been stopped at that stage vs Johnny nelson. And he beat Eubank yes, but Eubank gave him hell. i was at the Sheffield Arena in England when Thompson won on a doctor stoppage at the beigining of the 10th rd. Eubank, ahead by 3 points on two cards and even on the other...man that must have hurt. That rematch happened on 18th July 1998, exactly 3 months after the first encounter. If the rematch had been september, would Eubank have healed fully from teh first encounter and managed to reach the scorecards......YES! He wouldn`t have re - injured at that stage and probably won another round. I don`t know why that rematch took place so soon, i think it was because the first fight between Thompson/Eubank was so good they could sell it easy. Its a shame, given a rest, time to recover, Eubank might have between Thompson ( but Nelson i think would have had fun with simply the best in the mandatory next match )!

From looking at his performances I wouldnt say he was a great boxer, but he's got heart and he seems to have got better with age. I would say he's still got 2 years left in the tank

I'm not sure which fight it was, but I have it on tape somewhere, I think it was either Eubank or Rocchigiani post fight.

Thompson's punch from the Gods that put Rothmann into next week was definitely a KO of the year. Perhaps you watched the programme on Sky (who may not have had the rights to show footage)? I dunno, but it's definitely there in my books.

His defeat of Haye was more of a blunder on David's part than a resurrection of form for Carl. Then again, Rothmann looked on the verge of victory in their fight, maybe he'll always be dangerous, one of my favourites.

Good to see you can still be a Hayefan and appreciate Carl. I was surprised at how poor Haye's stamina was, a serious flaw there.

Thompson has been stopped a few times, by the likes of Crawford Ashley in 6, Yawe Davis in 2, Ralf Rocchigiani in 11, Johnny Nelson in 5. The only time he lost by KO was against Sellers in an absolute slugfest.

I was referring to Nelson's behaviour after Carl's rematch against Eubank(I think!?). He'd previously lost the first fight against Rocchigiani (that he was comfortably ahead on points in)due to a shoulder injury or something, it then took two years for a rematch to be made, in the Italian's backyard where Thompson triumphed. Things were starting to look brighter for a man who seemed to always be getting the short end of the stick. He then defeated Eubank twice in epic fights and it looked like the Gods were finally smiling down on him. After He'd beaten Eubank, in the post fight interview, he was approached by Nelson and his Trainer Brendan Ingle. Here's a quote from an article from another boxing site:

Having just beaten Chris Eubank for the second time, Thompson was in the middle of a post fight interview when he was interrupted by Johnny Nelson and trainer Brendan Ingle, initially just a bit of banter which Thompson made light of “you’re too good for me Johnny” turned into a bit of a jostling match which Thompson wasn’t pleased about “hey this is my night Johnny”.

That may not seem like much, but at the time I remember being so happy for Carl, and so pi*sed off that the poor guy wasn't allowed to bask in a little of the glory he'd earnt so deservedly.

Nelson beating him directly after that just seemed like a very cruel twist of fate for Carl.

I think I'm a fan of Haye's for good reason, he has the potential to become a great fighter, but he needs to walk before he can run. Thompson could have legitimately been stopped in a couple of the early rounds in that fight, but He deserved the win, if only to prove to Haye that he doesn't have to blow everyone out in a few rounds to reach the top, I'm sure he'd have been forgiven for fighting a smarter fight, as opposed to the more crowd pleasing route of going hell for leather without a plan B.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Haye was looking to set up the rematch as a part of his remaining few fights with the beeb. I dont think we'll really know whether Haye has what it takes until then. My worst fear is that he goes the same way as Pele Reid, God help me if **** unfolds in that manner.

I think most British boxing fans appreciate Carl, It's not often that we see fighters with as much heart and humility as him.
