Briggs: Bring on Peter!

Streaking, revitalized contender Shannon Briggs, 45-4-1 (39 KOs), wants to prove his superiority by taking on a fighter that few heavyweights would dare to face.
“Sam Peter is strong and aggressive, but there are a lot of flaws I could expose in him because he’s still raw,” explains the former linear world champion. “He might hit hard, but so do I. And I’ve fought three world champions and three Olympic gold medallists; Sam Peter has only had one real fight and you know what happened (Peter lost a decision to former WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko). I have no fear of him.”
Currently on a streak of nine consecutive knockouts and coming off a 16-second destruction of formerly undefeated Luciano Zolyone in Puerto Rico on December 10, Briggs says he’s ready for the kinds of fights that will make him champion again.
“We got turned down by Calvin Brock, and David Tua, so we reached out to his promoter, Cedric Kushner, and said we needed a major fight,” says Briggs’ manager, Scott Hirsch. “They asked if Shannon would be willing to fight Samuel Peter and he said ‘am I willing? I’d love it!’
I know it’s going to be a tough fight,” continued Hirsch, “but we’re looking for tough fights. Shannon was clearly the Comeback Fighter of the Year in 2005 and he'll be the World Heavyweight Champion in 2006."
So far, all the parties involved have expressed interest. “Dino Duva wants the fight, my promoter Cedric Kushner wants the fight, my manager Scott Hirsch wants it, Sam Peter and his manager want the fight, so let’s do it. I’d love to fight him in Madison Square Garden, or Atlantic City, or Vegas, but it really doesn’t matter, I’ll fight him anywhere.”
Though he has insisted all along that he could beat him, after attending Peter’s last two fights, Briggs is now shouting for a chance to prove it. “I’m going to take him to school and teach Sam Peter a lesson I was at his fight with Wlad and I was front row for Peter vs. Hawkins. He made a lot of mistakes in those fights that he won’t be able to make against me. I feel like a stalker. I guess I am. I'm stalking Sam Peter and soon I'm gonna get him.”
While Hirsch says they are hoping for the Peter fight to materialize, Team Briggs plans to stay busy, regardless. They are currently negotiating for a fight in late January. Briggs fought five times in 2005, scoring five knockouts against opponents who were a combined 102 wins and 16 losses.
