Comments Thread For: Andre Ward: Josesito is a Live Underdog With Canelo

Andre Ward has a better understanding than most of just how much weight can impact a high-level prizefight.

Ward dominated Chad Dawson on Saturday night in the WBC light heavyweight champion’s first fight in 6˝ years at super middleweight. Josesito Lopez is moving up to challenge heavily favored Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, not down, but Ward gives Lopez a significantly better shot at pulling off an upset than he did Dawson, who was about a 3-1 underdog against Ward in an HBO main event for Ward’s WBA/WBC super middleweight titles. All respect to Lopez for what he did in his fight with Victor. It was a great win for a kid with a lot of heart, but I still see Canelo handling him pretty easy. The difference is that Ortiz fights with emotion - it's his nature to want to strike back immediately when he gets touched, which leaves him in exchanges where he's squared up right in front of his opponent. Josesito took full advatage and pulled the great upset. However, Lopez reacts in a similar way when he gets hit, plus he's much wider thus leaving himself open for an easy counter. This plays right into Canelo's favor. Although Alvarez is young, he's patient, very balanced, and pinpoint with his counters. I think his cold, and clinical approach will take apart the wilder, and less polished Lopez before the final bell.
I'd love to be wrong, and far be it from me to disagree with the PxP Ward, but Alvarez has this well in hand.

I agree with ward, lopez is a scrapper with heart. very dangerous.

Ulitmately, i think it comes down to how serious canelo has taken lopez. If he is looking ahead....with that said i think he learned from ortiz about looking ahead.

Canelo is the type of guy who doesnt look past his opponents. He stays focus on whats infront of him. I think Canelo will have a blast with Josesito.

Unfortunately fights are fixed now days so everyone knows the outcome already. Canelo will stop this poor kid. Its not like back in the days when the champ had to face the number one or number two ranked contender. Belts today don't mean ****, ranking system serves no purpose.

Ward's boxing IQ is off the charts. I would not disregard anything that man has to say that being said however Canelo is no Ortiz. I expect Canelo to destroy Josesito. He has to.

I don't doubt that Lopez can lay some leather on Alvarez and make the fight exciting, I just doubt his ability to actually win. It's hard to imagine him winning.

If Lopez has anything between his ears, he'll fight the exact opposite of how he usually fights. The fact is that he's far rangier than ginger. I know team ginger expects Lopez to stand in front of him & brawl, while ginger counters smoothly because for some strange reason ginger's been playing the role of counter puncher lately.

Lopez should stay at the end of his jab & bounce laterally on his toes. He should fight the 1st half of the fight at a distance because ginger gases. If he manages to snap ginger's head about early, that is sure to zap even more energy. Then later he can brawl with a tired, worn out midget killer to his hearts desire. That's what I'd do.

Lopez was picked by Canelo and his team. That means he's all underdog, all the numbers favor Canelo. As far as live goes, he has a pulse, but little chance. Ward is a gentleman, and besides, why say what everyone else is already saying. About the protection and all that. He may have to deal with these people one day, so it's smart to play it off.
