Ward>>>>>>>>>>>Calzaghe

probably true, but talent is talent and Joe beat a very good version of Hopkins, subsequently proven by performances post that fight. It's a close fight. They fight quite similarly in alot of ways, but Joe has more activity and stamina. I'd go 60-40 in his favour.Comment

Joe Calzaghe is the posterboy for European fighters who grab a belt, and defend it against the easiest competition for years. He is the best byproduct of that system.
German based fighters do this all the time. From Erdei at 175, to Dzindurak at 154 (till he got his ass knocked out by Martinez), and many, many more. It's a great system to be a mediocre, semi-great fighter. All of their records are bloated.
If Jeff Lacy wasn't desperate enough for a payday and hadn't gone out there, Calzaghe still wouldn't have fought a top American. Unfortunately Lacy turned out to be a dud. If Average Joe had moved his operation to America sooner, he would've retired with something along the lines of a 40-5 or at best 42-3 type record. Take that to the bank.Comment

years before that hopkins had lost to taylor (in the 2nd fight) & he started to look slower. his stamina started to play up on him even years before the taylor bouts...........when joe fought him years after taylor he barely squeaked out a SD. thats not impressive to me.........& hopkins scucess was coming from the same distance style that ward loves to use.
ward has too many dimensions to me.......he can play the distance game very well & he can take you apart on the inside.........
ward has fought the better fighters. has the better resume. i don't see how calzaghie would beat ward at this point.Last edited by Godsfly; 09-08-2012, 11:26 PM.Comment

Fantasy fights are moot. The point is Andre Ward, tonight, became without question(imo) the greastest smw of all time. He has accomplished more than any other fighter at this weight.Comment

His workrate would get smothered by Ward. He would get caught with all the eye-catching punches and lose a decision. This is a new breed, this is evolution.
SOG >>> Calzaghe. They're both undefeated and Calzaghe has the record of title defenses in the same weight class that Ward happens to be in, but that's where the comparison should end. Ward will go on to do greater things in the next weight class, that will top Average Joe's accomplishment of beating two 40 year olds to solidify his legacy before retirement.Comment

This would have been a truly fantastic fight. Well, it never would've happened, cos Calzaghe would never have taken it.
But let's just say if the Ward of today fought Calzaghe from the period of Lacy to Kessler, this would've been awesome.
You know why?
Two guys who are winners. Who would never, ever tell the ref "I'm finished" or fight passively if they were behind. Who just don't know how to lose.
I'm a Calzaghe hater because he refused to seek greatness or true challenges. But make no mistake, he was a heck of a fighter.
I would favour Ward because he's just got so many wrinkles to his game and is more cerebral than Calzaghe, who fought more on instinct and heart. Calzaghe got this label as a master adjustor because he did so against Kessler. But it's Ward who adjusts, from round-to-round. He and Hunter would devise the right plan.Comment
