It's an identity/ ego issue. The real Roy left boxing years ago, but it's hard for him to accept that. He has to realize he's still a great even without his physical skills. He'll get over it eventually.

Ego have nothing to do with it, he loves to fight.
I have had the pleasure of meeting with Roy and talking to him about some things, one thing was evident to me. The man loves boxing, absolutely loves it, he knows it like the back of his hand. He isn't fighting for ego or money, he genuinely wants to fight. He can make money as an announcer, and he also promotes smaller fight cards.
You think he's paying his bills by traveling to Poland or Russia to fight people? He probably barely breaks even with travel expenses, paying trainers and sparring partners, etc.
