Filipinos vs Mexicans in Boxing World Cup

IF PLANS don’t miscarry, a blockbuster battle royale among top Mexican and Filipino boxers will take place early next year to determine the next Boxing World Cup champion.
A highly-placed source contacted the Bulletin to reveal that initial talks have started and that some topnotch Filipino boxers are being lined-up to battle six world-class Mexican fighters.
"The handlers of these Mexicans champs are now awaiting confirmation from their Filipino counterparts. But we still have to wait for the results of some of our chosen boxers who are still scheduled to face foreign foes in the next few weeks," disclosed the source who requested anonymity.
October of last year, Mexico won the inaugural Boxing World Cup title by pulverizing five-of-six world-rated boxers from Thailand held at the Desert Diamond Casino in Tucson, Arizona.
One of the Filipino fighters set to be tapped is ex-world superflyweight king Gerry Peñalosa who will reportedly be matched against Mexican Fernando Montiel with the latter’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) 115-lb crown also at stake.
Among the Filipino boxers that may take part are Cebuano Jimrex Jaca and world-ranked boxers Randy Suico and Yukka Gejon.
Rising stars Z Gorres and Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista are also being seriously considered but their manager Tony Aldeguer is still focusing on his wards’ scheduled fights.
The 18-year-old Bautista still has to deal with Mexican Gerardo Espinoza on December 23 in El Cajon, California while Gorres has a tentative Las Vegas bout early February.
In the unique event that staked four alphabet world titles, Mexicans Montiel, Jhonny Gonzales, Daniel Ponce de Leon, Hugo Cazares and German Cruz pounded their Thai rivals to bring the boxing cup title and the winning prize of $200,000 to their country.
Montiel kept his WBO superflyweight crown by decisioning Pramuansak Phosawan while Cazares defended his WBO lightflyweight belt via 6th round stoppage of Kaichon Sor Vorapin.
De Leon and Gonzales snatched the WBO bantamweight and superbantamweight titles by beating Ratanachai Sor Vorapin (KO7) and Sod Looknongyangtoy (UD12), respectively.
Cruz stopped Petch Windysports in four rounds while Terdsak Jandaeng prevented a Mexican shutout by scoring a split verdict over Carlos Contreras for a final 5-1 tally.
Boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya promoted the match through his Golden Boy Promotions outfit in cooperation with Thailand’s top promoter Kokiet Panachiyarom.
