"Nobody wants to fight Antonio Margarito," says Bob Arum, Top Rank's Chairman of the Board.
"I offered Fernando Vargas 4.5 million to fight Antonio, more money than what he's getting to fighting Mosley, and they said no," added Arum. "Mayweather turned down 6 million dollars to fight Margarito, they all make excuses, but eventually they have to fight him."
Wednesday Antonio Margarito 32-4 (23) acknowledged that his February 18 bout with Manuel "*******" Gomez 28-10 (20) is only a stepping stone to greatness. "I won't lose this fight. I have a promise to my fans to win," said a confident Margarito. Although Margarito is normally as quiet and reserved as a boxer can be, his opponent drew a few choice words from Margarito.
"I expect a great fight come February 18th," stated the un-intimidated challenger Manuel Gomez. "This fight was supposed to happen in November (Klitschko/Rahman Undercard), and if fell through, but this time Saint Vitali Klitschko won't be here to save Antonio. I'm not Kermit Cintron. I'm not one of the chumps he's fought. When I get in the ring, I won't freeze up and get scared, I'll be the one doing the scaring," added Gomez who promises to make this fight a great show for the fans.
Naturally Margarito disagreed. Gomez' words of confidence prompted a sharp reply from the WBO welterweight champion. "Mr. Gomez has a very big mouth and I will shut that mouth up," said Margarito. "He says I've fought chumps. I think I've fought guys better than him."
Added Margarito, "Not only will he not beat me, but I'll be knocking him out, I promise he'll be getting knocked out."
The undercard will host the return of the always exciting Filipino Brian Viloria 18-0 (12). Viloria will be making his first title defense since earning the WBC light flyweight championship belt by way of an devastating first round KO over then champion Eric Ortiz. His opponent will be IBF #8 Jose Aguirre 33-4-1 (20) of Tabasco, Mexico, who is coming off back to back losses to then WBC light flyweight champion Eric Ortiz and current WBA champ Roberto Vazquez. Also on the card will be undefeated Ivan Calderon, who will be boxing against TBA. Calderon hopes a win in February will lead to a move up in weight to challenge the also undefeated Brian Viloria.
