    Quick question

Can some one explain these 'standing 8 counts' that keep occurring for no real reason in the Olympics?

if the fighter looks hurt/stunned (sometimes it only needs a flush shot 2 land) the ref jumps in n gives them a 8 count (checks to make sure they are ok). I dont think the count does anything to the scores tho which is a little unfair as the other fighter could finish them

many times in the am's if you even just get hit with a flush shot that may not even hurt you they will do a standing 8 count.

It's to protect the boxer, and the BMA has tried for many years to have boxing banned completely. I seem to recall (correct me if wrong) that they were able to show that amateur boxing also can cause brain damage, so, as a sop, the Association brought in far more stringent rules, of which I think that this was the major one, along with headgear.
