Michael wasn't a national figure until after the accident, he's a national hero now though.

You have to remember, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank fought live on terrestrial ITV at prime time (there were only four channels back then) on a Saturday night, they were extremely popular.. on TV shows and in the papers all the time (especially Eubank for his eccentric behaviour). You couldn't walk down the street and find somebody who didn't know who Frank Bruno or Chris Eubank was, you still can't.
