  • Ben Thompson - Team Escobedo agreed for Broner to come in at 134

He of FloydHype made some comments on FB -

FYI, Team Broner requested the bout to be at 135 before it was made, but Team Escobedo refused. Team Escobedo, Golden Boy, and HBO all knew Broner wasn't going to make weight days in advance. They agreed so long as he came in below 134 on scales and below 140 morning of fight.
Actually, poor Adrien wasn't forced to do anything. He was giving up the title after this fight anyway, so no loss there, and he's still fighting at the weight he originally wanted, a decision that cost him 60K, which I wouldn't be surprised to hear won't come completely out of his own pocket. Technically, it's really smart business move if the weight ain't coming off. And no, things like this don't "kill" boxing. Fighters miss weight all the time, year after year, in multiple combat sports. LOL
There you have it folks. It's a smart business move not making weight.

And hey, fighters miss weight all the time. No biggie.

I just don't like his un-professionalism in the matter. Also I agree its all a smoke screen and they are playing Team escobedo like some fools, Do they really think a 140 weight limit at 9am is anything. Broner comes in at 143 fight night, They should have made the weight limit 137 same day but no he basically came in at 135 and a division above and no real penalty.

          more gems from Thompson....

Actually...yeah...smart business move if you were privy to the discussions that occurred days before, but hey, you obviously know more than me. ;-)

I never said missing weight was something to trivialize. What I said was the other team was aware days ago that he wasn't going to make weight, and they agreed to it, a catchweight if you will, so long as he got under a specific weight and didn't balloon above another weight the morning of the fight. Had it been a surprise to everyone involved, then I can see your point, but it wasn't a surprise to Team Escobedo, Golden Boy Promotions, and even HBO, who talked to him about not making weight during the fighter meeting the morning BEFORE the actual weigh-in occurred. In other words, Escobedo knew days ago, so he too could have chose not to make, as I highly doubt he's walking around right at 130 on Wednesday, likely still needing to shed 1 or 2 pounds.

I think this is bull****... Why would Broner be fined if they agreed to a catchweight? Doesn't make sense.

                  Re Floyd-JMM -

And actually, to address the Mayweather/Marquez comparison, if you take the time to do some research, you'll learn that Marquez and his trainer/manager, Nacho Beristain, knew full well that Mayweather wasn't going to fight him at a catchweight. I'm not even sure why that would make any sense when he was angling himself for a Pacquiao fight and a catchweight fight with Marquez would've given Pacquiao the leverage to demand Mayweather to fight him at a lower weight. What the contract stipulated was that Mayweather would TRY to come in lower than 147 and would TRY to meet him at a lower weight, and if they weren't close in weight, Marquez would be rewarded a dollar amount for every pound away from each they were. Hence the reason why NO ONE would verify what weight the fight was taking place at. Even up until the final press conference, Golden Boy Promotions was telling everyone to just tune in to the weigh-in to see what weight the fight was at...and Leonard Ellerbe insisted it was simply a "welterweight" fight. There was no big stink when Mayweather didn't "make weight" allegedly because everyone already knew what the deal was. And it wasn't Mayweather that ended up paying Marquez the extra money he got...it was his own promoter. The truth is out their my friend if you know where to find it.

Why the hell would Escobedo come in at 130 if he knew it was a 134 catchweight? He drained himself on purpose?
