Comments Thread For: Donaire Passes a Test, But More Remain: Ratings Review

There will be some disappointed in Nonito Donaire’s inability to overwhelm Jeffrey Mathebula last Saturday. With pound-for-pound accolades come hollow expectations (something the always excellent David Greisman explored in his Monday column here at BoxingScene). For whatever reason, it’s not enough to just win.

I thought it was a great performance considering he was fighting another champion in an unification bout. Can't wait til he fights Arce.

I want to see what kind of numbers they pulled on HBO for the Donaire fight, and on Showtime for the Ortiz fight. Just curious to how many people watch these boxing events.

Interesting to see you have Garcia over Matthysse as well. That was quite a debate in another thread.

Also I'd have Chavez over Golovkin and Pirog based on resume at 160. Might be better talents, but Chavez jr has the better wins.

According to Iole Ortiz pulled around 750k on Showtime.

Don't know about Donaire's recent fight but his fight on the Chavez Jr card pulled 1.8 million on HBO plus something like another 100 million from Mexico and the Phillipines.

HBO and Showtime are smallish networks of around 30 million subscribers and boxing does some of the better numbers on their networks.

Tr should've matched Donaire vs Arce after Travieso beat WV2 for his 122 strap. Not have Arce vacate and than match Donaire vs the loser (WV2) for a vacant title. Too many stall tactics and now the matchup is irrelevant. It does nothing for Donaire, the 122 division, or boxing as a whole. Team Donaire is just trying to use Arce's style & stature to shine Nonito's image up a bit due to his lack on recent KO's.

This current scenario of having Nishioka, Rigo and Mares is very similar to the 118 scenario that Donaire was in. For whatever reasons, Donaire had potential matchups with Mares, Moreno, Perez fizzle before he moved up. Hopefully they don't let more opportunities "pass" them by and sign a relevant fight (Nishioka, Mares, Rigo).

For Bob and Nonito Rigo is not a black guy, he is transparent, nobody can see he is best at 122lb and a real top 10 pxp.
The only thing Rigondeaux can do is try to fight at least four times a year, and move to 126lb next year, forget about this paper champs.

Yes, stay busy, create impressive wins to make a case against the other belt holders. If he became a bigger draw and they still refuse to fight him, then his anti-duck campaign holds more water.
