Rocky 1 and 2 had a shadow boxing style. On the Rocky DVD special features, it has the director John G. Avildsen speak about how they got the fighting down pat, and he even has film of when they were practicing.

Rocky 3 I'm not sure of. I know for Rocky 4 he let himself get hit for real a few times, and he got pretty messed up by it.

I watched Roy against Bryant Brannon the other night... cracking stuff to see him that good again.
