Judge validates Arum's deal with Rahman
Judge Bruce A. Markell of the Las Vegas District Court yesterday rejected a contract by promoter Don King and validated one by Bob Arum with World Boxing Council champion Hasim Rahman, in a decision the fighter's promoter, Steve Nelson, called "a total victory."
The move allows Rahman to "maximize Rock's potential financially in the ring," Nelson said. "The judge recognized that we have always had problems with Don King and now we can move forward under Bob Arum, whom we believe will help us to do that."
In other news, Rahman and challenger James Toney will fight for a 60-40 split of the purses, in favor of Rahman, if the fighters' camps do not reach an agreement on the money before Dec. 20, WBC president Jose Sulaiman said yesterday.
Dates in March are being discussed for the first title defense by Rahman, 33, a Baltimore native now living in Las Vegas, and the 37-year-old Toney (69-4-2, 43 knockouts).
If an agreement is not reached by Dec. 20, Sulaiman said a purse bid will be held on that date - the same day Rahman (41-5-1, 33 KOs) is to formally receive the WBC belt given him with the retirement of Vitali Klitschko.
Toney's promoter, Dan Goosen, has asked for a special distribution of the percentage of the purses "because [Goosen] believes his fighter is more marketable," Sulaiman told The Sun on Nov. 25.
