Golden Boy Promotions' Richard Schaefer has claimed he's been informed by the World Boxing Association that their light-welterweight title will be up for grabs when Amir Khan challenges WBC champ Danny Garcia on July 14th.
Khan was originally scheduled for a May 19th fight against Lamont Peterson - who beat the Bolton man by way of split decision in his home town of Washington DC back in December, taking his IBF and WBA titles in the process. But Peterson then fell foul of a drugs test.
Khan was then matched with Garcia, a fixture that might have been helped by the fact that Schaefer promotes both men.
Golden Boy Promotions, according to Schaefer, sent letters to the WBC, IBF and the Washington DC Commission requesting that the organisations "rule the fight a no-contest," and, asking "the IBF and the WBA to re-instate Amir Khan as their champion."
Schaefer told ******.com today that the WBA has notified him it will sanction Khan's bout with Garcia, who stopped veteran Erik Morales in March.
"I've gotten verbal confirmation that the WBA is going to have Amir fight for the WBA title, so that's that," said Schaefer. "As it relates to the WBC, we already know that the fight is also going to be for the WBC title so their fight will definitely be for two belts."
Peterson-Khan still is to be reviewed by the IBF, which had indicated that it would not make a decison on whether to strip Peterson until after his medical records were examined by IBF President Daryl Peoples and a physician.
