Absolutely shocked as well - Stevenson dead at 60?
Not only was he one of the best fighters to ever to compete in the amateur ranks, he was such a class act. He was also riveting to watch.
Stevenson redefined what it meant to be the best amateur in the most recognised division in boxing, & he did it honestly.

      He will be missed.

Many people don't understand how crummy life in Cuba is even for a three time Olympic champion, hero to his people and darling of the state.

Stevenson's amateur career is the stuff of legend, but I've always been very sober about his chances as a professional. Teofilo would've fought some big names, including the very biggest (Ali). How does one begin to weigh his chances against the top pros of his era? Then again, a guy like Stevenson had gifts that cannot be taught, most notably that incomparable right hand. What if he had turned pro after his first gold medal (age 20)? He would've had a chance to grow, develop, evolve. Alas....

Stevenson defeated the American Duane Bobick at the Munich games in 1972. Duane was 22; Teofilo was 20. Stevenson defeated American "Big" John Tate at the Montreal games in 1976. John was 21; Stevenson was 24. Stevenson defeated the Russian Pyotr Zayev for the gold medal at the Moscow games in 1980. Pyotr was 27; Teofilo was 28.

Teofilo was undoubtedly one of the all time great Cuban boxers. I am currently doing some research for a university dissertation on the subject of the Cuban political system and how this was reflected through the career of Teofilo. His famous quote "I prefer the affection of 8 million Cubans" obviously demonstrates his commitment to country and Castro's revolution. I was wondering if anyone had any information on how much his career was influenced by his countries political system?? What role did Castro play within his career and what was Teofilo doing after his retirement?
