yes in my opinion,it depends how you look at it,the olympics showcased his talent to the world and his huge following in pico allowed his father and co to put on shows in his home town which sold out everytime,i believe he made more than most fighters would have made that early in his career, had he went to top rank or another big promoter you could argue he might have made more but most of that money wouldnt have been going to roy and his family.with talent like roy you can do things your own way to a certain extent,i think his record speaks for itself jnr middle, middleweight, super middleweight, light heavy and heavyweight champion,8 world titles, and i believe hes financially stable so i would say yes roy jones was very smart.

He owes the IRS a few million-which is probably why he is still fighting.

Are you sure about that.It always amazes me how such successful fighters end up being chased by the irs,its as if in the later part of there careers someone releases there financial gains and whatever unpaid taxes they missed,i dont believe roy would still be fighting to pay this,im not saying the guy wouldnt fight to pay his bills i have no idea or insight to his personal life but as a fan i believe roy loves what he does theres a post fight interview i saw once roy was like 21 22 claimed he would still be fighting when hes 45.

I think he had the right idea and the unique circumstances to make it work if he had other big name opponents to really cash out the way Floyd does now.

Yes, he was smart in the way he built himself...he had the benefit of the olympics and the latter days of network boxing like CBS.... start local in Florida, venture out and fight in place that don't always get boxing or go into town and fight the local favorite. pick up a ton of fans and/or name recognition along the way. At the height of his career could go to the east coast, west coast, and the south and sellout. Not many fighters can do that, so he definitely was successful in making himself incredibly mainstream without modern tools like 24/7, YT, etc. The south was a huge market for Roy and it's an area of the country IMO that is grossly ignored by promoters.

If he had some big named rivals to make PPV events when he was at his peak, I think we definitely be saying he was smart. I'm not talking about worthy challengers, I just mean big names to make $$$ making events in Vegas, where you can really maximize the profit and him being without a promoter really would have paid off.

I will say that promoters can provide a buffer between the fighter and some of the BS in boxing which can be quite convoluted and distracting....so seeing the financial difficulties Roy might be having now could be a result of not having the proper people around him to roadmap his career. someone who would have given him an opinion from the outside looking in. it's unfortunate to see him now...but at the same time, a lot of people in general seem to respect people who "did it their own way."

I'm positive about this...it was when he went over to Russia to fight Lebedev...It was on boxingscene and a few other sites last year.

Notice how Roy has went overseas more than ever...he has been to Oz, Russia, and next stop is Poland....he wouldn't fight there unless he needs the money...worst yet,he is getting peanuts compared to what he used to and he is getting his azz handed to him-knockout after knockout.

He may crave the attention he used to get when he was on top of his game, but he is delusional and needs to hang em up...I can see him getting put in a coma.

Damn that really is bad news i agree oz russia poland very strange places to go and fight when you been in country all your career. Its such a shame when i saw your reply i was like these fights could never generate the millions you say he owes but they probaly are making him alot more than he could get back home at this stage.Wish he would hang em up and i pray to god he gets out with all his marbles.Maybe he should go see B-Hop for some stamina advice i know roy is getting on but those last to fights his energy levels were not good, yes his speed and reflexes have greatly diminished but if he can maintain his energy levels every round that means he can "keep moving" because nowdays when roy stands still its scary **** to watch even against the low opposition he faces now hes cruiser and those boys hit hard.
