Was Salavdor Sanchez really that good?

Okay so first off, I wanna say that this question is not asked by me, but of Pedro Fernandez at Ringtalk.com. I decided to put it on here becasue I was growing tired of the repetiveness of the forum, you know ****e things up a bit...Please note that these are not my opinions but the opinions of Mr. Fernandez

THREE AMIGOS, SANCHEZ, NELSON, & GOMEZ: In 1984, Azumah Nelson, 126 lbs., scored a KO in 11 over Wilfredo Gomez, also 126. This was the second loss for Gomez, who was a monster at 122, but not so at 126. Both men would lose their first fights to Salvador Sanchez. Gomez, the betting favorite, was KO’d in 1981 by the late Sanchez inside of eight heats. Azumah was TKO’d late in July 1982, in what was Sanchez’s last fight. Azumah had a professional record of 39-5-2, with 28 KO’s. Gomez was 44-3-1, (42 KO’s). Sanchez ran into a chicken truck and died while racing back to his training camp! From 1975 to 1982, Sanchez was 44-1, with 32 whacks! SANCHEZ OVERRATED? MEXICAN ICON OR FABLE? Here’s the question of the day, was Salvador Sanchez truly a great fighter? Sanchez died after a night of sex, and was speeding in order to appease his trainer who was against females in training. So was he good, or is the legend of Sanchez puff, because he died young?

Sure he was good, damn good but imagine if Roy Jones Jr. would have been killed in a car wreck after he beat James Toney...

Legends grow as time goes on and even though there is no doubt that SS was a a great fighter we will never no exactly how great he really was.

Without question the man was good, but I don't think that he was great becasue of his premature death. You have to prove your greatness over a number of years, no doubt though, he had the potential to be great.

He beat a couple of Hall of Famers, he also beat a very tough Danny Lopez twice. So Id say he was pretty good.

            My opinion, as well.
I have gone into much further detail about his standing, a way's back.
But, the post above is the concise version.

I agree, but one thing you should do is check out how good he was. I remember seeing him completely dissect/destroy Little Red Lopez twice, and it wasn't close at all. This was back when Little Red was a considered a monster too.

Sanchez beatdown Laporte, Gomez and Nelson too, the latter two were Hall of Fame fighters. In his prime he reminded me of Erik Morales (or the other way around really) - technically very sound, but he just loved to go to war and beat the other guy up.

But I totally agree, his career is a lot more "what he could've been" than "what he really was".

Let's put it this way, he was 10-0, 5 KOs in title fights and his victims include 3 HOFers in 4 total fights and was 23 when he died in an early AM car crash. 23 was around the age that SRLeonard cracked the top 10 and got his first title shot. He wasn't as dominant and devastating as young Tyson, but he and Tyson sort of stand out as very young champs above other talented young champs. It seems he died because he was slacking in his training and was out late partying, or so the story goes.

Eventually he and Arguello were scheduled to meet, and I'd pick Arguello in that match, but SSanchez could have won at least 5 more title fights and maybe double depending on how well he stayed dedicated to training.
