I'm not a major fan of Paul Williams but upon hearing the news that he was paralysed from the waist down I honestly came close to tears in the sense that regardless of what you think about a professional boxer, whether you're a fan of theirs or not you have to respect the fact that they are athletes who put a lot of work into staying shape and take pride in their physique.
It is crushing for anyone to experience such a travesty in their life, don't get me wrong, just that I feel it far more when it strips the person of the profession they spent years in crafting.
______
I hope for two things, one that Paul will become stronger from the event, people always say that the lord works in mysterious ways. Maybe it was his time to bow out of the sport or/and maybe he can become an inspiration for other fighters coming through.
The next thing I hope for is that the fans show more respect for boxers that step in the ring. I'm not going to pretend as though I didn't write him off after his knockout loss to Martinez, I assumed that it was a matter of time before he lost. Whilst that opinion is one I genuinely held, I feel as though I could have been more respectful in the aftermath.
It makes me realise how disgusting certain things are in terms of people sitting on the sidelines and mocking an individual who has put their blood sweat and tears into the sport.
