Comments Thread For: Winky Wright Discusses How He Spent His Recent Layoff

The three years which Winky Wright spent away from the ring weren’t entirely by choice. The 40-year old would have loved nothing more than to enter his June 2 fight with Peter Quillin any other way than on the heels of an extended layoff and a two-fight losing streak.

Unfortunately, no such opportunities surfaced for the former 154 lb. king and pound-for-pound entrant. With offers limited to that of opponent role, Wright instead decided to take a break, but also stay ready in the event that something came along.

It sucks that he couldn't get fights. Been a big Winky fan for quite some time.

Winky hasn't won a fight in over 6 years (and that happened to be against age old Ike Quartey). I just don't think this comeback is good for him.

Thats odd I never heard the krispy kreme story about him but after searching its been around for a while. Never seen him blow up in between fights. Only time he was ever soft was up at 170 for hopkins.

Winky really should have taken the Taylor rematch when it was offered. $5mil plus PPV share, cause we all know the rematch would been PPV, the first fight was way to good for it not to be, but that would have been his biggest payday. Had he taken the rematch, they could have fought in Vegas and he probably would have won that middle weight title he was seeking. But a focused, in shape, disciplined Winky IMO still beats most of the middle weight in the division.

                    1. Winky def. Sturm
                    2. Winky def. Pirog
                    3. Winky def. Martinez (toughest fight, but Martinez lack of defense hurts him in this fight and Winky doesn't fold like the B and C level fighters he's been fighting)
                    4. Winky def. Lee (difficult fight due to Lee's height and reach)
                    5. Winky def. Chavez on boxing skills alone...
