I know Ali was past his best and beat him in the second fight, but what i wanna know is how he got the fight in only his 8th fight? was he some kind of mega cash cow or something? Also is that considered his prime years, based on the fact he dint reach the top after that?
How the Hell did Leon Spinks defeat Ali in only his 8th fight?

He won the gold medal, Floyd Patterson fought Pete Rademacher (gold medalist, it was his first fight), gold medalist will get fast title shots. -

Because he won a gold medal & Bob Arum promoted him. Arum paid off the WBC to get him ranked for a title shot if he defeated some bum. Ali turned down the fight initially but after seeing Spinks struggle against the bum, he figured since he beat Patterson, and Frazier he'd go for three gold medal winners and fight Spinks. Ali was old, didn't take the fight serious, and didn't train hard.Comment

Ali had one of the worst camps of his life, and was in horrible shape. He shouldn't have been fighting anymore anyway.
Look at his next few fights after Spinks. You have the win in the rematch, where he prepared better and took it a little more seriously. Then you have the disgraceful fights with Holmes and Berbick. These fights should never have happened.
Sure took a whileComment
