Peterson really showed up the lack of any input by Roach to teach Khan inside fighting skills. These were always lacking and it is a disgrace that work was not done on this glaring weakness. Roach has done a great job selecting opponents to flatter Khan's style and work round his deficiencies. The problem with this method is you don't always get to pick and choose and the mandatory rules mean you have to take a real fight from time to time. Maidana and Peterson were both mandatories and both showed him up.
As long as Khan can be kept away from good pressure fighters he will be OK but for someone with the hype he has around him he really should be a more complete fighter. I don't see him getting better under Roach. Khan is certainly more famous through his association with Roach and Manny and I think Ariza has done a great job on the conditioning but against a good pressure fighter and counter puncher Khan is an accident waiting to happen. His amateur style needed a complete overhaul and then he would have been able to live up to the hype. To me Roach is good at working round a fighter's existing talent but no good at teaching new tricks especially in the defence department . Clearly Roach took too many shots as a pro to get his Parkinson's desease and is not up on defence. Roach seems to work on attacking but not on defence. That will work on weaker opposition but what happens when the other guy is good.
