There are two superfights for Floyd to make: against Martinez and against Pacquiao. They are the only two fights in which he wouldn't be the odds on favorite. He'd still be favored against Pacquiao but probably not anymore against Martinez. Floyd won't make either fight. It is hard to stomach Floyd's lament here--he won't fight the two best guys near his weight. I give him credit for his fight with Cotto, where he dealt with adversity and stormed to victory with 3 great closing rounds. But as i said before the fight, Cotto is a diminished fighter. Nobody can take the beatings he took from Margarito and Pacquiao and be the same figher. For Floyd to perform as mediocrely as he did against this version of Cotto suggests he is nowhere near the fighter he once was (neither is Pacquiao for that matter).
why won't Floyd fight Martinez or Pacquiao? Martinez agreed to come to 150 for the fight and offered him 80% of the money. Martinez is way more of a challenge at 150 than Cotto was at 154. Martinez would KO Cotto at 154. Let's not ignore teh elephant in the room--Cotto wasn't the best competition at 154 for that fight.
why won't Floyd fight Pacquiao? He essentially said last week he wouldn't fight him because his "health was more important" suggesting Pacquiao was on 'roids. Pacquiao agreed to take the WADA/Olympic style tests. What is the issue here? Money? It was never issue in the prior negotiations. Why is it here? Granted, getting Arum to risk his cash cow in this fight will be difficult too, but Floyd has shown little interest in making this fight recently.
Floyd's always been in the driver's seat for superfights because everybody good wants to fight him. That's where the money is. The problem is that if Floyd agrees to fight you, he's already concluded that he can't lose the fight. He won't fight anybody that has a chance. That is pathetic. Martinez and Pacquiao have a chance, so Floyd has ruled them out. That is awful.
