In the latest Frankly Speaking, Frank Warren takes a look at the wacky training methods of Priest Smalls, and says Jack Johnson wasn't all he was cracked up to be.
"Christmas is always a tough time of year for boxers who are in training for fights, as they have to sacrifice indulgence and family time for endless hours in the gym.
WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison has left his young son in Scotland to prepare in the mountains of Spain for his January clash with Victor Polo, while super-middleweight king Joe Calzaghe is getting in shape for a February 11 fight.
But two other boxers - Tiger “Priest” Smalls and Manny Pacquiao - appear to have somewhat more unorthodox methods of preparation.
Pacquiao is supposed to be boxing Juan Manuel Marquez in early 2005 for a £500,000 purse, but has been out on the booze and spends most of his evenings playing pool instead of training.
Yet that is nothing compared to world-rated Smalls.
When the American wakes up he smokes a joint and drinks a gin sling, lifts some weights and then smokes a joint, has breakfast and then smokes a joint, goes for a run and then smokes a joint, goes to the gym and then smokes a joint…
I’m not sure where such methods would leave him with the drug testers but I'm sure he will get weeded out.
It is also a surprise Smalls can get any weight off as he must have the munchies all the time – perhaps he should have spent his Christmas having some cold turkey instead of the real thing!
Meanwhile the powers that be at the WBC appeared to have indulged in a little too much Christmas spirit when they announced they are to introduce the “All Africa World Championship”.
Boxers of African origin will be eligible to fight for the belt, whatever country of the world they are living in?
But as a fair proportion of the USA’s population is made up of African Americans, just where will the WBC chose to draw the line?
Are we going to get an all Isle of Man World Championship next?

Looks like someone's been stealing my ideas! I never smoke cigarettes or drink while training, though. I find smoking weed after working out is a great way to relax and recover from a hard workout. The guy is genius, as sweating is a great way to clear out your system.
