Comments Thread For: Eddie Hearn on Tony Bellew: He's Going To Be a Big Star!

Liverpool's Tony Bellew lit up the city's ECHO Arena when knocking out former European light-heavyweight titlist Danny McIntosh in five rounds on Friday night. Bellew's first defence of his British 175lb belt was his maiden voyage as sole headliner at the impressive venue. His most recent outing at the ECHO had seen Bellew share the bill with James DeGale when “Chunky” won the EBU super middleweight title from Piotr Wilczewski on the undercard of Bellew's unsuccessful WBO world title challenge to Nathan Cleverly in October – a close decision defeat.

Yeah good performance from Bellew, would be good to see him face maybe the german but he wouldnt come over here so I dont think thats an option. Theres not really anyone out there maybe he should go to America.

If by big star Hearn means at Euro level then maybe yeah but that's where it stops.

Beating a future bouncer does not make you a star.

This just goes to show Bellew for all his pulling power - the 15,000 or whatever didn't turn up for him but to see a World Title fight, he pulls 3,000 for this fight which says it all.

Maybe the 12,000 other scourers still feel he promised and let them down or they're not, unlike Bellew thought his fans but fans wanting to see a World Title or Champion from their city.

Once that's gone so are most of his fans coincidently.

He's never going to be a star - he'll never be an elite fighter, he may pick up a strap at World level and by British standards considered well known in the UK.

But even Froch - nobody outside Britsh sport fans in the UK has a clue who he is - so I can't see how Bellew becomes a star.

The last crossover stars in the UK were Calzaghe, Hatton.

Khan is the only current British fighter to be quite well known to the general British public - ever since he picked up a silver medal the media and TV have always given him that coverage.
