Earlier today, the WBC announced that WBC super middleweight champion was being moved from the regular WBC champion to Champion in recess due to Ward’s left hand injury. The WBC then designed that #1 WBC contender Anthony Dirrell would face #3 WBC contender Nikola Sjekloca for Ward’s WBC title.
Ward said this on his twitter page “I appreciate all your support on the WBC situation. In my mind and in the fans eyes, I’m still the champ!!!. We’re gonna keep on working.”
As far as I can tell, the hand injury is already healed and Ward is merely waiting for a big fight to open up for him. It’s only been four months since Ward captured the WBC title from former champion Carl Froch, and he’s still got at least two months to get his title defense in, yet the WBC took the title away from Ward anyway. Why would they do this? To get a sanctioning fee for the Dirrell-Sjekloca bout? That’s what some boxing fans are saying.
Dirrell will no doubt take care of the little known Sjekloca without any problems, but that still doesn’t help Ward. He would then have to face Dirrell, if he can get the fight with him, and fight him for his own title.
It’s strange that the WBC would do this to Ward while allow champions like WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. avoid his mandatory defense against Sergio Martinez. It doesn’t seem right that Ward has to lose his title and Chavez Jr. doesn’t.
