    Hard work and dedication.

Contrary to what Mayweather stated. You can't be forced to box as a kid, like his family did to him. Then flip it and then say they are god given talents.

20 years ago I'd say hard work & dedication.

Present day, superstar status & masterful matchmaking carry the day.

            Well.... that's not entirely true.

            Look at Pac...

Anyway, it's marketability and matchmaking these days as mentioned. You can have all the god given talent in the world like Ward, Sergio (well..he started late but he kind of still fits into here) who don't get their due props by the public no matter who they fight or are trying to fight.

Then you got guys like Canelo, JCC Jr...and Donaire can almost count, regardless of how gifted he is (although he can almost count in the first category as well) and even Pac can be in here too. People are just magically ok with the "stars" fighting people who have no business in the ring with them seeing as there is top notch competition for them to fight.

You used to be able to just beat the hell out of everybody and get your props. Now, they don't even give you the chance to do that with all the politics... Prime example..look at Jcc jr and Martinez. Dude seriously going to vacate his title to avoid the best in the division. Not too long ago, people would die to fight the best in the division..

                both obviously

you also need good handlers and a good trainer

some of it comes down to luck as well. the fans choose who they want to see

for instance, today you see lots of american fighters at or near the top who cant sell a thousand tickets.

Wins and losses...If you're young and undefeated and lose, you fight a couple of gimmies and then get a shot at redemption.

If you win THAT fight you continue on, if you lose you're looking at fighting a young prospect who's in the position you were in when you were undefeated.

That end result in the ring is the only way to carve out your legacy in the sport.

Train hard and the fight is easy. You will also need a bit of luck along the way.

and a good promoter helps too...
