What does Cotto do that puts him in this league?

I have been a distant fan of Miguel Cotto's for a while now and I have to admit that Im falling off the bandwagon-and no it is not all because he is Puerto Rican.

Diego Corrales, Ricky Hatton, JL Castillo, Floyd Mayweather...all of these guys do something extordinary, my question is what does Cotto do that puts him in these guys league?

Corrales is p4p the bet puncher in the sport, p4mohter****ingpound!

Castillo is the sports premier machine, his chin is second to absolutely positively none!

Floyd is easily the fastest fighter of the bunch and has the most all around talent...is their a better defensive fighter in the world? **** no.

Hatton is the most relentless fighter of the four, his punch output is ridiculous and his nickname should be HELL because thats where you need to go to beat him.

As for Cotto...what does Miguel do that is going to get him to the top of this class?

If anyone has some thoughts please fill me in because Im losing faith.

i dont think cotto is in those guys level yet. you need experience with top 10 pound 4 pound fighters to get to that top level!
but i think that when he fights those top guys he'll learn alot and he'll gain more experience from 1 top fighter than he has fighting all the bums he has been, but he will get there one day!
and im sure he'll be a good champion!

Will he be a paper champ or will he actually beat the above mentioned fighters?

Anyone can win a belt, not everyone can do what Hatton did which is beat THE MAN. Does Cotto just win a belt or does he own a divsion?

All four men mentioned have onwed a division.

What cotto needs in most peoples eyes is to fight a top 10 guy.Hatton-Cotto obviously needs to happen,it should be easier to get done now hat floyd has gone 147.

What he's done to make me a fan? Impressed me with his boxing skill and power, pulled through even when he was in trouble. And I feel he's continually fought good competition, but obviously he hasnt had that top fight to make him a marquee fighter.Personally though i rate him above Castillo&Corrales, and i think he can beat Hatton, but thats just my Opinion.Regardless, even if cotto lost tomorrow,I'd still be a fan, i like his style too much.

If I were to point to 1 thing that has gotten my intention with Miguel it would be his ability to recover.

Gatti and Holyfield were guys that people used to mistake for having great chins...in all reality their chins were never as advertised...what made them special was their ability to recover after being zinged a bit. Does Cotto have a similiar ability?

Cotto has shown very good recovery skills, he has been hurt badly but he has dusted the setbacks off and come back warring...you can look at this as a postive or a negative...Im just not ready to spin it in either direction yet.

I think the big thing with Cotto is that he's supposed to be the next big Puerto Rican star after Trinidad. He's taken a couple of bumps along the road, but I think he'll come by just fine.

Cotto has an excellent offense. He throws a great variety of punches, and is a throwback to the old style of that He is a great body puncher.

He's got great instincts and side steps around to buy time, holds, and punches back. I think the common misconception about Cotto's chin is that it is not good, but not bad either. He does have a huge heart and I think He should just be smarter and to take a knee when need be.

Cotto is showing great resilience, just like all the great fighters before him showed. What more do you guys want?

the only special thing that has made him famous is that 1. Hes under Bob Arum and 2. Hes Puerto Rican, and not matter what he does if hes Puerto Rican, Puerto Ricans will think hes the best ever.

Good post Scap. Haven't really got an answer, but good post.

Tell the truth, I've only seen Cotto in his last two fights so I wouldn't feel qualified to answer anyway. I think his last one was probably the most exciting fight I saw all year, including that overrated one with the gumshield spitting.

His chin did kind of impress me... how many shots did he take AFTER he was stunned? And while the (UK for me) commentators were screaming at him to initiate a clinch to clear his head, the guy - perhaps ******ly, but just the same - carried on trying to trade like a warrior.

I agree with your post 100%.......Cotto has really done little to be spoke about in the same league with these guys and I too am starting to wonder if he ever will but it is still early and he is still young and I guess we just have to wait and see.

THE MAN that you are refering to is a has been champ, a once great fighter, an aging, slower, weaker fighter.
