I made a call and left a complaint on the Nevada State Athletic Commission's voicemail. Below is a copy of the complaint letter I sent to the Chairman of the Commission, Raymond Avansino Jr.:
To Mr. Raymond Avansino Jr, Chairman, Nevada State Athletic Commission,
Last night, April 14, 2012, I witnessed one of the worst boxing decisions I've ever seen. Richard Abril clearly should have been awarded a unanimous decision victory over Brandon Rios. Instead, when the cards were read, Rios was granted a split-decision win. It was a travesty and an embarrassment to the sport of boxing. The fight was nowhere near being close. This is not just my opinion; Internet boxing sites are awash with complaints about the scoring and eventual outcome. Out of hundreds of posts I read, not a single person thought Brandon Rios won the fight. It's not just the fans that are disgusted by this horrific decision. Noted boxing journalists, such as Dan Rafael from ESPN, are screaming "robbery."
Results such as in Rios-Abril are destroying professional boxing, not to mention its athletes' careers. I implore you to investigate the decision in this fight. The score cards were the product of either incompetence or corruption. Either way, the offending judges must be taken to task. Several months ago, there was a similar injustice when Erislandy Lara was denied a clear victory over Paul Williams in Atlantic City, NJ. The commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, Aaron M. Davis, did the right thing and took the unprecedented step of suspending the "judges" that handed down that terrible decision. I urge you, Mr. Avansino, to take similar and decisive action in the matter of Richard Abril versus Brandon Rios.
Thank you.Comment
