Australian Boxing Historian Ray Mitchell Passes Away...
As I grew up reading Ring Magazine in the 1960's and 70's, their coverage
of boxing in Australia was handled primarily by the astute Ray Mitchell. It
is with great sadness to report that Mr. Mitchell has passed away. He was 86
years old.
Through Ray Mitchell I learned of the great Australian champions like
Lionel Rose and Johnny Famechon. I also became familiar with many other fine
Australian based champions and contenders like Rocky Mattioli, Jeff
Malcolm,Tony Mundine, Paul Ferreri, Henry Nissen, Big Jim West, Jeff Harding
and the great Jeff Fenech.
I for one can not think of boxing in Australia without associating it
with Ray Mitchell. He was a very influential force. Rest in peace Ray.
