Floyd's upper body slickness, parrying, shoulder rolling, clinching, and ability to fight off the ropes allow him not to be as reliant on lateral movement for defense. Keep in mind that we're hearing about it all from roach's perspective. None of his fighters have upper body slickness, parrying, shoulder rolling, clinching, and rope fighting skills, so movement is the holy grail of defense in his mind.
Great points, you made alot of sense

Well I agree Floyd has settled down a bit and sure he may have slowed down some, he is getting older. Anything Roach says is garbage though because he is obviously completely biased. Funny though he said in another article no way Cotto can beat Floyd etc. lol. Roach can say whatever though, and I respect his viewpoint regardless, but he is done as a top trainer and he knows it. Pac is pretty much done at this point (and will be lucky to get by Bradley), Khan has plateaued, Kayode sucks and will continue to be exposed, Linares continues to lose and JCC jr we all know is one fight away from being done. Garcia is quickly becoming one of the top trainers, if not the top one.

we'll find out if roach is right with the cotto fight....cotto will be putting big time pressure on floyd...and being 35, hard to say when floyd will hit the wall...oscar was done by 35, but he had been in a lot more battles than floyd

So you agree with Roach that Floyd doesn't have lateral movement these days?

Garcia ain't that good. In the Donaire/Narvaez fight his instructions were crap.

Cotto couldn't even keep the pressure on Shane Mosley...he had to run.

Shane walked thru everything Cotto had...but he couldn't walk thru Floyd's punches.

Cotto will be scrambling backwards with that sad look on his face we've all grown accustomed to.

Roach is right. Floyd is getting older and it's definitely showing. He was basically bullied into the corner by Ortiz and hit with many flush shots. He was being pushed back so much that he felt the only way to beat the kid was to cheat, and what better way to cheat than sucker punching? But then again, this is the same Mayweather that lost to Castillo, Oscar, and got rocked by Hatton, Judah, Mosley and will get hurt by Cotto. He never had great lateral movement to begin with.
