  • Comments Thread For: Roach Explains Amir Khan's Strategy To Defeat Peterson

Trainer Freddie Roach has explained the strategy for Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KOs) to reclaim his WBA/IBF junior welterweight titles from current champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KOs). They collide in a rematch on May 19th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Peterson defeated Khan under controversial circumstances to win the WBA and IBF titles on December 10.

khan always has been easily tempted to move away after he throws and peterson knows how to apply pressure to pin him against the ropes

if roach doesnt form a plan b that includes inside fighting khan is in for a long night...regardless of the outcome

It sounds like a typical roach plan but I think he's going to have to learn how to fight a little on the inside and clinch in spots. Don't pull a Molina but a little clinching will give Peterson something else to worry about.

Absolutely, Khan better have a game plan set aside to fight inside the pocket not if but when Peterson gets in close with him. And yes if he somehow manages to get khan against the ropes he better watch his body or end up on the canvas from Peterson's inside power..

Don't believe that's the game plan roach and khan wouldn't make it so obvious to the public.

Hopefully Khan will learn some self-control and stop with the pushing this time around. Peterson fought so well, but Khan lost that fight for himself.

It's not so much self-control more the fact Khan has no idea what to do when Peterson gets inside.

Roach's only concern should be teaching Khan how to deal with pressure/insider fighters without needing to push them away. I cannot believe how much Khan lacks on the inside, it's cringe worthy. The uppercut will be key in the rematch, it's one of the most underrated punches in the game.

I dont think roach would make his plan public. I see another close fight here, Peterson seems like the kind of guy who will grow in confidence for holding the title. I may even have a few quid on a draw.

why it's hardly anything groundbreaking or secretive in nature? The jab happy fast hand guys generally do better in the middle of the ring

It is self-control though. When Khan is being out boxed or dominated he instantly goes for the push - opposed to boxing back. That hurts him, imo.

Also, I think Khan needs to learn some humility and give his opponents the credit they deserve. He doesn't take them seriously, so how can he prepare for a fight if he thinks he automatically outclasses them simply because he is Amir Khan?

I love Khan, but I think losing the first fight was the best thing to happen to him, he will go into this fight knowing he can't afford to underestimate Peterson again.
