It's looking like Margarito for Chavez

With the talk of Rubio vs Mayorga (whom i thought would be the other possible choice) It now seems like the search for a June opponent for JCC JR is closing in on Antonio Margarito.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Disgraced and disfigured former world welterweight champion Antonio Margarito said Friday night that he wants to face box-office darling Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in September.

Margarito was at the Casino Del Sol in support of his brother-in-law Hanzel Martinez, who knocked out Jose Miguel Tamayo in one round.

“I’ve been told I could fight on May 26 here in Tucson,” Margarito said. “But if it’s in June, that’s fine, because it’s in September that we’re going to fight [Chavez].”

Margarito said his next fight, whether it’s in May or June, would be a tune-up.

Margarito said he is currently in training and that he weighs only five pounds more than the middleweight limit of 160 pounds, which is where Chavez fights.

He said he has no problems with his right eye. The orbital bone around the eye was broken in a lopsided 2010 defeat to Manny Pacquiao; the same eye was shut in December in a 10th-round technical knockout loss to Miguel Cotto.

Margarito was suspended for a year by the California State Athletic Commission after he was caught with illegal handwraps prior to his 2009 loss to Shane Mosley. Margarito has repeatedly said he didn’t know he was wearing tampered handwraps.

He figures to make sense as a potential opponent for Chavez, a fighter with suspect skills and credentials who has become a major attraction because he is the son of Julio Cesar Chavez.

In Margarito, Chavez would be facing a high-reward, low-risk opponent. Margarito remains one of the sport’s visible figures, but has lost three of his last four fights. Chavez would have a significant size advantage over him, as Margarito fought at 147 pounds at his peak. Both fighters are promoted by Top Rank.

"The opponent isn't the main thing in this fight," said event coordinator Lester Bedford. "The event and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are the main things. We will have a top 10 opponent in the world for this fight. There are plenty of guys who want to fight for the world middleweight championship."

Let's see which parts of those statements are true.

      WBC top ten

      1. Matthew Macklin (GB)
      2. Billi Facundo Godoy (Argentina)
      3. Avtandil Khurtsidze (Georgia) SILVER
      4. Andy Lee (Ireland)
      5. Marco Antonio Rubio (Mexico)
      6. Grzegorz Proksa (Poland) EBU
      7. Martin Murray (GB)
      8. Domenico Spada (Italy)
      9. Jermain Taylor (US)
      10. Joachim Alcine (Haiti-Canada) INTL

I'm assuming that was the top ten list they were referring to, not the ring's.

I'm putting Tony (even though not ranked) as the front runner. MAYBE Proksa or Taylor? With a very slim outside chance of Lee

those two would slug it the hell out. they have no other real options. neither can box well.

margarito has no hope a against a guy so large and so fresh at this stage in his career.

chavez will be 180 lbs on the night of the fight and tony wont be close to that

chavez via ref or doctor stoppage in the corner. both eyes and full grill totally roughed up
garcia probably wont stop it ("lively, you bastard!")
        and tony certainly wont

The problem isn't Chavez being a fraud or what have you...it's his piece of **** promoter.

Chavez beat 2 top 10 (ring magazine) contenders in the past year.

Yeah I never thought of that...
I'm surprised someone with the hype and the name that he holds that he isn't a part of the Golden boy thing

I agree he has beat some of the big guys but I can fondly remember the Alvarez vs Chavez fight that was suppose to happen a year or so ago but breaking down and most of the blame from what I read was on Chavez Jnr who knows...
I just want to see him fight Martinez and get in better shape aswell!
