It depends ultimately on the ref pretty much. Each state has a difference tolerance for it but it comes down to if the ref likes them or not. Fokk hopkins, fokk floydina joyce, fokk Molina and all the clinching hugger chickens in the world. This is killing our sport period.
If they really wanted to impliment a new rule to stop it, they should do this....
Use a COMPUCLINCH counter. When a fighter holds or clinches more than 10 times in a round, that's a point deduction. If a fighter holds/clinches more than 10 times a round in more than 3 rounds, automatic DQ.
It would stop if that happened. There's natural clinching and holding and then there's the Akinwande, Molina, Ruiz excessive holding. And if you are going to hold and clinch, at least try to work the body and fight on the inside to fight your way out of the clinch. Don't hold the others arm underneath your armpit and hit him, let go and punch, and than hold again.
Then comparing today's fighters to past greats will be even harder, I say leave it alone, it's all about quality refs really.
It only bothers me depending on the way it's employed. If he's throwing then tying up (Mosley) then I can cope with it. If he's also able to fight in the clinches, work some hooks and uppercuts inside (Ward, Hopkins, Floyd) the better. Now when he's mostly looking to clinch, not run his offense first, spoiling/ running the clock...don't expect me to enjoy that. I liked Molina's performance against Lara and Cintron by the way, but the Kirkland fight was godawful.

Because Kirkland is an inside fighter. Anytime Molina came withen 5 feet of him, he held for dear life not allowing Kirkland to do anything

He was suppose to, the way he was fighting, he was suppose to. His way of neutralizing Kirkland's offense, 80% of it was through illegal means.
