"If I could get a couple of quick fights in during the next few months, I'd be super happy. In my third or fourth fight back I'm planning on not only fighting for the titles but taking them home with me. 2006 is going to be my year and I'm going to do whatever I have to do in order to do it. I'm willing to make the sacrifices...I haven't had a chocolate bar in the last six months." Read on to see what else Kirk Johnson had to say.
GL: So what's next for you Kirk?
Kirk Johnson: "We're talking about fighting sometime in the middle of January, and if everything goes well and I don't get injured, I'll be back in the ring six weeks later. Obviously, injuries are a part of the game and you can't overlook them but so far I feel pretty good."
GL: How do you feel about Klitschko's retirement?
Kirk Johnson: "It surprised me, but then again it didn't. I know for a fact that Klitschko will be back. He would have been stripped from the title anyway, so I gues in his mind it looks better for him to retire than have the title stripped from him. I think it's a political move. I think he's too young and has too much going to retire now. After he gets the surgery on his leg and he rests for a while, I think you'll hear from him in about six monts. And by that time I'll be ready to fight anybody and everybody. I want to fight anybody that's going to move me in the right direction. When Klitschko's decides to come back we could do that again too, I never wanted to be in this game to be a has been or a journeyman. I got into this game because I wanted to make some moves."
GL: Has it been difficult to stay in shape during this inactive stretch?
Kirk Johnson: "Yes. I've been in great shape but I feel if I was fighting more regularly I'd be a lot sharper. When you're training for a situation it makes you that much more focused. When you're just training just to train, it takes that edge off. I'm doing things at the same speed because I'm still running my three miles in about twenty two minutes, but when I'm training for a fight, I'll really get great time on that last half of mile even though I'm tired. When I'm not training, I'll push it but I won't push it as hard. Mentally, it makes a difference when you're training for a fight. I want 3-5 fights this year and if that happens, you're going to see me in the best shape of my life."
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?
Kirk Johnson: "I want to thank all of my fans for always supporting me and I'm just looking forward to staying very active and taking at least one of the titles home in 2006."
