What's so Scientific about the "Sweet Science"?

Its just a name appied to the sport.
Just like Muay Thai is called the science of the 8 limbs and MMA is probably called the science of gayness (jokes!).
Every sport, be it combat related or not has some form of science involved. Some more so than others.Comment

I think the term has nothing to do with physics or any technology. It's a very old term, and I can say that I've seen the term in more than one old book, even then, many years ago, well 100 years old. No ordinary person knew anything about science.Comment

Maybe because Daniel Mendoza began a new style of defensive and skillful boxing which didn't depend merely on strength and brawn. He was around about between 1780-90. He was only a little fellow about the size of Manny Pacquiao and routinely fought 6 footers of 180-200 lbs. And beat them.Comment

It was Ray Leonard who first called himself that. It was because his name was Ray, and reminded him of Ray Robinson. He adopted the nameDidn't even know this.
Sugar Ray Robinson and Sugar Ray Leonard both received their nicknames from the phrase “sweet science.” Both fighters used technical, adroit strategies to outclass opponents. Ray Robinson’s trainer, George Gainford, gave Robinson the nickname when he was an amateur. Gainford said Robinson was “sweet as sugar.” The nickname stuck and was subsequently used to describe the other Ray (Leonard) when he arrived on the boxing scene.Comment

very good answers here like this one and the one from larryx and manny phresh. the science of boxing is far more than just out toughing another or out punching. from the training, which is specific and serves a unique purpose for each style of boxing, to the foot work, to the process of which punch to throw in which situation. for every punch there is a counter punch. and for every punch there is a way to neutralize that punch. every punch thrown opens up the opportunity for a counter punch. calling the sport the sweet science is not because it "sounds cool" but because it IS a science. when you watch film on jack johnson (one of the best EVER) he talks about how he has forgot more about boxing than a lot of the fighters of that era ever knew. like it was suggested find a gym and learn the science from the ground up. from training, nutrition, shadow boxing and defence. then you will have a true appreciation for the sweet science. aptly named.^THE PERFECT ANSWER!
It is also like Checkers and Chess, most prefer Checkers because it is Easier and moves at a Faster Past, compared to Chess which requires a lot of THINKING and it moves at a much slower pace
and Master Chess Player (Boxer) sits back and watch your every move and wait for you to make a mistake then he jumps on you and make you pay for every Wrong Move/Mistake you make, only people who truly has a understand for the game of Chess (Boxer) can appreciate the SKILLS, while the Checkers (Brawler) Fans calls Chess "BORING" because they just don't understand what they are watching
Also a Master Chess Player is good at both CHECKERS AND CHESS while and while most Checkers Players can't play Chess because they don't understand it
might be too philosophical for this forum but it is so true if you really think about itComment
