  • Boxing's yearly PPV numbers are still bigger than the UFC's

Some people don't seem to realise this but both the UFC and WWE group their international and domestic PPV numbers together. In the case of the UFC a wrestling mag journalist is the only source but he has gone on record showing where these PPV buys come from. Boxing only reports its domestic US numbers so the results are being skewed. If we were to find out and compare boxing's international PPV numbers then the UFC would look like crap.

Some we do know of from the past:
    Lewis-Tyson got 800k UK, 1.9 million US
    Hatton-Mayweather 1.4 million UK, 900k US
    Pacman-Hatton 1 million UK, 900k US

Obviously the numbers don't always look that big, but even getting 50k from one country can push the numbers up more. It's said that Mayweather-Ortiz got 50k buys in the UK on primetime. What about Australia, Canada, Japan, Puerto Rico or all the Latin American/Eastern European countries who use PPV?

So say we have the UFC averaging 300k PPV buys, in reality the domestic number is at least half that. Likewise, a boxing event like Hopkins-Dawson which got 50k would have done around 200k when the international numbers are added. The WWE does this too. The royal rumble was reported at 500k buys international, with only 200k coming from the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The US number was probably around 100k.

    Confirmation boxing PPV's are domestic:

Maybe I'm wrong, but i think boxing is a way more global sport than mma. I would say there is no comparison in europe atleast. I read weeks ago, boxing is way more popular than mma even in japan, after a years of mma or k1 growing. Boxing has history on his side, and will be hard to other contact sport to get where boxing is right now. But well, if promoters and judges keep ruining it, who knows.

MMA in Japan has pretty much flat lined at this stage. Lots of different things happened to hit at the same time: no strong talent, Yakuza corruption, sagging interest, no more draws. It's said there was just a fall in interest which led to falling ratings, and the networks used the Yakuza connection rumour as a way of terminating the contract legally.

I've always loved Boxing way more then MMA but the way Boxing is being ran is a ****ing disgrace and a joke. Its turned me off a lot. Its become pathetic. Imo the UFC is ran perfectly. Idc who makes more money, the fact that UFC is giving fans better quality fights and PPV cards is what matters to me. We can't even get the 2 best fighterss in the sport to agree to fight. We got a promoter (Arum) blantly ignoring other fighters cuz he doesn't promote them and can't keep all the money for himself. Its sad man. UFC is doing great right about now. Even if they aren't making the most money.

Good post. MMA has topped out at this point. Don't see how it could get any bigger. I never really bought into the whole "MMA is overtaking boxing" thing. Because when it comes down to it, ONE pac or floyd fight makes MMA PPV numbers look like $h!t! Come monday morning when everybody gets back to the office, who's talking about what happened on saturday's UFC card?? *crickets* Compare that to who's talking about the aftermath of a pac or floyd fight, and it's easy to see that BOXING IS ALIVE!!

All that might be true but what's happening in Boxing is beyond sad. What Arum is doing is shameful bro. UFC is ran 5x better cuz its less politcs involved.
