Comments Thread For: Andre Ward Inching Closer Towards Ring Return

Plenty still lies ahead to remind Andre Ward of the terrific campaign he led in 2011.

The unbeaten super middleweight saw his career soar to new heights thanks to his success in the Showtime Super Six World Boxing Classic, capped by his points win over Carl Froch last December. The feat – coupled with his near-shutout of Arthur Abraham seven months prior – earned Ward near unanimous honors industry-wide as 2011 Fighter of the Year. [Click Here To Read More]

So much for seeing the best MW against the best SMW at a perfectly fair catchweight. . . And guess what, Ward's not the reason to blame for that not happening. . . .

He should fight Andre Dirrell next. He came back after being out of the ring for 1-2 years and looked good still. He has one loss to Froch, in a fight he arguably won, and he's beat Abraham as well. It's a good fight to be made, on that could easily be made to happen in California, where both have fought a lot.

That won't happen. Dirrell would never accept the fight and has no real promoter and manager.

The problem with that is that the real MW champion isn't a MW at all; he's a LMW! It's bad enough that he has to fight above his weightclass now. Two weightclasses above would be almost impossible.

Too bad as champion he won't take a tune up bout to test his hand and shake off ring rust.
