That's like asking why did Bernard fought Tito and Oscar at middleweight only worse by the fact that Sergio has fought most of his career at 147 and 154 where Floyd and Cotto are fighting now.

Hypocrisy is just part of the game. He's doing what Hopkins did when he turned down the Showtime contract after Tito; he's waiting for big money from below. There's no sin in being a champion in a division, especially Middle, and keeping to it. Talking about of both sides of the mouth is fodder for critique and fair game.

As to fighting the best competition, outside of Barker, his opposition has been pretty strong. You can nitpick Pavlik, Williams, and Dzin if you want, but those were all high quality wins. Tonight, he had a real top ten contender, got a challenge, and responded. That's what champs do.

He gets overhyped (more than overrated IMO) but he's a bad dude. Given his development arc, and heavier hands, and likely three division weight advantage, I do think Chavez might end up a much tougher fight than anyone sees coming if it happens.
