Not the case. As numerous folks have pointed out in the press (From Reeno to Kim to Rafael), the actual pen to paper often doesn't happen until late in the game. No one was trying to force anything. This was all standard business.

But there has to be a verbal agreement before the promotional tour starts and tickets go on sale, Gamboa said he never agreed to anything. It'll be interesting to see if TR can prove he did.

Top Rank is saying they have a contract and I have a hard time believing they spent all that money on a media tour, started selling tickets and had the place booked but didn't have an agreement.

Top Rank has a history of proving out to be right when these contracts disputes come up. They said Gamboa did agree to the fight and signed the contract. I bet that proves to be true. Like I said, this isn't "I will meet you after school after by the bike racks". This is a professional fight that takes a ton of planing and legal contracts to sell tickets. It just doesn't happen and Gamboa is not trying to get out of it.

You don't necessarily need a written contract for the agreement to be enforceable. Clearly top rank detrimentally relied upon gamboa's verbal agreement by advancing gamboa 70k. Will depend upon the facts, but such cases are very winnable.

2. He was tweeting that he was preparing for the fight
3. He definitely requested the 70k advance and that in itself is like sealing the contract prior to actual signatures.

I am not a big Bob Arum fan, but do agree that he is a good businessman/attorney, and will enforce his contracts. Now, I think the problem with Gamboa is that he signed with Oner and Top rank is promoting him? So at the end of the day from his payday he has to pay his Manager,team, and whatever money Top Rank takes..plus he has family in cuba and in Miami?

I can see him wanting more pay, but he might be on the bench for a while if he tries to skip out on Top Rank..

His complaint cannot be about the amount he's signed to fight for ($1 million). Probably isn't another fight out there for him right now where he could get that much money. What percentage he gets of his purse because of his representational contracts may be a real issue. He also might be following the path of an Al Haymon fighter: avoiding dangerous fights to make almost as much money fighting tomato cans. Haymon has made his fighters lots of money with that strategy while prolonging their careers and simultaneously depriving fans of many good fights.
