That's what I got from it as well. A lot of negotiations and contracts with the networks and such and such but nothing but an agreement with Gamboa.

This reminds me of those verbal agreements athletes have in HS Football then change their mind on signing day. Or even on the professional level when Carlos Boozer told the Cleveland Cavs to let him become and unrestricted free agent so he could sign for less money only to break that agreement and go with the Utah Jazz.

Looks like nothing was set in stone.. Just an agreement from Gamboa with Top Rank and Arena.. But no contracts was said to be signed between the parties.. It's gonna get interesting

Could it be possible that Arum gave Gamboa the advance with the PROMISE that the fight would happen and Arum took his word for it? Arum goes along with the promotion, Gamboa then says f uk it & doesnt want to fight anymore BUT Arum continues with the promotion on every level?

Please no more amateur lawyers giving their 2 cents on contract law. 1 there is more to contracts than having a signature and 2 there is more to contract law than a verbal agreement. Contract law depends on several variables. For example a mutual promise, offer and acceptance, a promise to perform. So please stop butchering contract law with limited knowledge!

That doesnt work in court.. Its about what can be proven and nothing else matters.

What if Gamboa's side of the story is that he told Arum he wasn't going to fight and Top Rank still went ahead with the promotion. It would be his word against Top Ranks if their isn't a legally binding contract correct? What if he never spent the advance and still has it ready to give it back?

It would work like this. Bob Arum would make an offer to Gamboa, if Gamboa accepts (he can accept by verbally agreeing, signing the contract, taking money). If he accepts he makes a promise to perform said function of the contract. Performance in this case is participating in press tours, making commercials regarding fight, etc. Plus thier are what are called "implied contracts". So there is much more than Gamboa signing the contract.

You're presuming that I am not aware of or familiar with the contract law. Where exactly did I mention law or lawsuit or lawyer in my post?

Gamboa's career is most likely ****ed. I'm assuming his defense team will either argue a) ignorance (since he is Cuban "ignorance of the law does not excuse" may not be applicable to Gamboa), or b) negligence cause by a breach of the duty of care by a third party to the defendant (Gamboa). Given the parameters of the case, these look pretty weak, so Gamboa will most likely be fully liable for his actions. Prediction: TR TKO1 Team Gamboa

bob arum is slime and his company top rank has been caught before rigging fights, and stealing from their fighters. nothing slanderous and libel about that big boppa.

While I tend to agree that Arum puts profits before scruples (like all promotors do), when has he been caught stealing money from his fighters?

Im not defending Arum by any means, but I don't think he's any worse than other big time promotors. He simply gets his 27% cut as far as I know. . Im sure you could make better returns if you promoted yourself, but in order to promote yourself you gotta have capital in the bank to put up (RISK), and an established name with mainstream fans to make any money. . . Usually promotors don't even see a return, much less profit on fighters until they get to about the stage Yuri is at now. . .

I doubt Golden Boy would take much less than a 27% cut. . .

First thing you learn in law school is that the law doesn't protect the ******, or the lazy.


Unless Gamboa can argue he was drunk, or he was forced to sign it under duress, there's nothing he can do. . . He has more than enough experience with promotors at the time he signed the two year extension (IF he did sign it). . . I don't see how the negligence defense will be applicable here, especially with Arum getting him a 1.2 million dollar payday on HBO (what other fighters at his weight, and with his experience get that kind of pay)? Of course none of us have seen the contract, so we can't even begin to talk about whether or not it is valid. He DOES have a beast of a lawyer, though, and I doubt his lawyer would advise him to tell TR to basically phuck themselves unless he thought they had something pretty solid. But on the same hand, Arum is a saavy lawyer with over four decades of experience at this, so I don't see how he wouldn't have anything less than an airtight contract.

BUt I absolutely want to see Gamboa fighting again ASAP, so Im 100% on his side, and I'll fight for him anyway possible to see this shyt get settled up with the quickness.
