All indications point to WBA interm-lightweight champin Richard Abril getting the nod to face former lightweight champion Brandon Rios on April 14th. Featherweight king Yuriorkis Gamboa was scheduled to make the jump up to the lightweight division to face Rios but had a change of heart and decided to walk away from the fight. I saw this as the best way to save face. . . Alvarado/Rios isn't as "high profile" of a fight as Gamboa or Rios, but it's damn sure a FOTY candidate that would be enticing for casual and hardcore fans a like. .
But like Phantom said, too risky for Arum . . . Arum would rather continue to "build" Rios and Alvarado - profiting off BOTH of them in future big fights.Comment

I don't see why they didn't do this. Rios already said he only wanted to stay at 135 for a major fight or a title, which isn't Abril. Rios-Alvarado is a very good fight, and one that Rios can lose. Neither guy is a very good boxer skill wise, but both can ****, have heart, and are huge punchers. It has FOTY written all over it. I'd favor Rios to win still, but can you imagine if Alvarado knocked Rios out???Comment

Hopefully Rios-Alvarado happens after their April 14th fights, sometime in July or August would be nice. Or even after their next two fights, sometime in November/December. Have Rios move up to 140 and fight someone like Johan Perez, Paris-Judah winner, or something like that. And have Alvarado fight either one of those guys as well or someone like Victor Cayo. Than, have them fight in November/December, so long as they both win.Comment
