Yuriorkis Gamboa disappeared Monday when he was supposed to be at a press conference in Miami to announce his fight with Brandon Rios that's currently scheduled for April 14.
Now Gamboa (21-0, 16 KO) has come out of hiding to confirm that not only will he not show up at Tuesday's press conference, but he hasn't signed the contract yet to face Rios (29-0-1, 22 KO).
Gamboa gave an interview to Ring Magazine that was translated by his wife, Maria Cabrera. Gamboa stated the following about the fight:
Whenever everything is clear with my contract, that's when the fight will happen, but right now I'm not under the terms that I want the fight to happen. I don't have a problem with HBO, and I hope that HBO doesn't have a problem with me either because everything that's happening with me, I didn't choose to be in the position I'm in right now.
But this is the time to do this, because if I don't stand up for myself, nobody else is going to do it. I never thought that things would wind up this way, but there was never a contract and there was never a signature from Gamboa agreeing to fight with Brandon Rios on April 14.
Gamboa had been spotted training at Floyd Mayweather's gym in Las Vegas, fueling the industry rumors that he's signing a promotional agreement with Mayweather (42-0, 26 KO). Gamboa denies the rumors.
Gamboa had this to say concerning his purpose for being in Mayweather's gym:
I'm here in Las Vegas with my father [Carlos Gamboa,] and I've been training in Mayweather's gym because he [Floyd Mayweather Jr.] is my friend. He offered me his Gym so that I can train there, since the fight is going to be here in Las Vegas. That's the purpose of my training here.
Gamboa reiterated that he isn't scared of Rios, but wants the business end of things to be handled properly. If Gamboa faces Rios on April 14, it will be Gamboa's first title match at lightweight (135 lbs).
